The four elements of Water, Earth, Wind and Fire were noted by the Celts and they associated them with the seasons and with the directions.

Water was linked to Autumn and to the West.

Earth was linked to Winter and to the North, as this is where the cold wind comes from.

Wind was linked to Spring as it brings new life and is associated with the East.

Fire was linked to Summer and to the South. They believed it to bring good fortune and by lighting midsummer fires, they enticed the sun to spread its heat far and wide. Fires lit on October 31st, were in gratitude to the sun for the year’s harvest.
